In her new country, Norman’s sister had renamed herself after silent movie vamp Theda Bara.

Theda’s first husband Charlie “was so gallant and sweet– when he walked down the street with a girl, he’d always move to the gutter side.” He was a gambler who bet on horses, and died outside their stables.

Theda’s second husband, Uncle Irving, had a candy store beneath the elevated subway on Kings Highway. He was as sweet as the shopping bags full of candy he’d bring home for us to take to our grandfather’s summer house.
